TEACHING & OUTREACH
Teaching
As a biology instructor, my goal is to help students construct a framework on which to arrange knowledge while teaching them how biologists ask questions, test ideas, and communicate their results. Through my courses, I hope that students gain lifelong skills, such as critical thinking and the ability to write concisely. I try to challenge students, whether they are biology majors or not, to think about how the study of biology fits more broadly into their education.
Courses Taught:
BIOL 1050, 1051. General Biology for non-majors.
BIOL 2250. Ecology.
BIOL 2800. Biological Instruction, a training course for biology Undergraduate Teaching Assistants.
BIOL 3010. Scientific Communication.
BIOL 5220, 5221. Freshwater Biology/Limnology for undergraduate and graduate students.
BIOL 7970. Teaching Natural Science in Higher Education, a training course for graduate students interested in teaching.

Outreach
Spreading curiosity and a joy of discovery is a primary goal with our outreach events. We work closely with ECU Biology’s Biodiversity Initiative and other community organizations to provide programming for people of all ages. Join us at a future event! See ECU Biology's Biodiversity Initiative web page or our lab's social media for a list of upcoming events.
